Many patients wonder when the “right time” is for a tightening procedure or for non-surgical eye treatments. The following aspects are intended to help you move forward in your decision-making process.

Brow lift – correction of the shape and/or position of the eyebrows

In some people, the outer part of the eyebrows droops significantly, which can give a somewhat sad expression, or the brows sink lower with the ageing process, which can even restrict how wide the eyes can open. A brow lift helps to return the brows to a natural, flattering position and gives the eyes a more open, fresh appearance.

This is an outpatient surgical procedure in which the brows are lifted using fine incisions above the brow or in the temple area.

Upper eyelid lift – when the eyes look heavy

Over time, the upper eyelids can accumulate excess skin, making the eyelid look heavier and more tired. This results in what is known as a drooping eyelid. This can not only affect facial expression, but also restrict the field of vision if the skin encroaches on the line of sight. Applying make-up is also more difficult due to frequent smudging.

Upper eyelid surgery is a commonly performed surgical treatment to remove excess skin and fatty tissue from the upper eyelid. The scars are optimally concealed in the natural eyelid crease. This procedure helps to improve the field of vision and makes the eyes look more open and alert.

Lower eyelid lift – against under-eye bags and dark circles

Under-eye bags and dark shadows under the eyes give the face a tired expression. Loss of volume or the accumulation of fatty tissue leads to an exhausted, overtired appearance.

Lower eyelid surgery aims to remove under-eye bags and excess fatty tissue beneath the eyes to make the eyes look fresher and more awake. Removing wrinkles and tightening the skin are also often among the goals of this procedure. The procedure is performed via a fine incision inside the eyelid (transconjunctival method) and may also require an additional incision under the eyelashes. The fat is optimally redistributed and excess removed, as is excess skin if present.

Facial volume harmony – facelift or lipofilling

Over time, the face can lose volume or it can shift unfavourably. A facelift can redistribute volume more favourably and restore contours. This is a surgical procedure that is usually performed under anaesthesia. Through fine incisions around the ear, the subcutaneous tissue is tightened and volume is shifted back to its original position. Excess skin is removed.

With lipofilling, also known as autologous fat transfer, lost volume can be restored. Using your own fat creates a natural result that refreshes and tightens the eye area. Lipofilling is a minimally invasive surgical method in which fat is taken from other areas of the body and injected into the eye area or other parts of the face to compensate for volume loss and tighten the skin. This creates only small puncture sites, without actual scars.

Is there an ideal season for correcting the eye area?

The surgical procedures mentioned can be performed without any problems throughout the year. At the beginning, the eyes are protected with sunglasses from wind and sunlight (and curious looks). Please allow for downtime of 1–2 weeks for most procedures.

Lifestyle factors that can delay surgery

Good skincare, sun protection, a healthy diet, not smoking and sufficient sleep have a proven positive influence on our health and youthful appearance. While these good habits do not replace treatment, they do support the effects and an optimal result should you decide to undergo treatment.

Discreet corrections with Botox or hyaluronic acid fillers

These non-surgical procedures do not replace surgery, but they can positively influence the appearance and ageing process of the eye area. One advantage is that they can be performed easily in the practice, with no downtime afterwards.

Boost self-confidence

Many patients report that they feel fresher, more vital and more confident after tightening of the eye area or the face. The fresh, well-rested expression and look is noticed as a positive change not only by you, but also by those around you.

Experienced specialist: the most important factor

Aesthetic facial surgery of the eye area is meticulous, precise surgery, and choosing an experienced specialist in Plastic, Reconstructive and Aesthetic Surgery is essential. A detailed consultation helps you to assess your expectations realistically and achieve the desired result.

The right time for tightening the eye area

The right time for an aesthetic treatment of the eye area depends not only on age, but also on individual skin structure and personal wishes. While some procedures can be beneficial at a younger age, other patients opt for these treatments when the first signs of skin laxity or volume loss become visible.

Each treatment has its own effect and can often also be carried out in combination with other measures to achieve an optimal, natural result.

If you are unsure whether now is the right time for you, or if you would simply like to learn more about the various options, we are happy to help. A consultation with me can help you find the right time and the right method for your needs.

The decision to undergo an eye treatment is very personal. The goal is for you to feel comfortable and confident, with bright, radiant eyes.

PD Dr. med. Eva M.
