Liposuction

Eliminate stubborn fat deposits and sculpt your silhouette according to your individual goals.

Liposuction

Sometimes the body stores fatty tissue in specific areas that persists even with a healthy lifestyle and a normal body weight. These stubborn deposits often respond neither to diet nor exercise. Liposuction makes it possible to specifically remove these regional fat accumulations and refine the body contour as desired. Typical zones include the abdomen, hips, back, thighs, or the chin.

Liposuction is a proven procedure for removing such localized fat deposits and creating harmonious body proportions. PD Dr. med. Eva M. Rüegg uses advanced techniques for the procedure that are minimally invasive and extremely precise. Excess fatty tissue is gently suctioned out through small incisions using tissue-sparing cannulas.

The result is a more natural and defined body shape that is immediately visible and continues to optimize over time as the tissue heals. Liposuction is not a solution for general weight loss, but it is excellently suited for shaping body zones that remain problematic despite all efforts with diet and exercise.

A comprehensive guide

Principle

01

Liposuction is a surgical procedure designed to remove stubborn fat deposits that cannot be reduced by diet or exercise alone. Common problem areas include the abdomen, thighs, hips, back, or under the chin.
The treatment aims to refine body contours and create a harmonious, aesthetically pleasing silhouette. It is not a method for weight reduction, but rather a way to improve body proportions and specifically eliminate fat accumulations.

Technique

02

Depending on the scope, the procedure is performed under local anesthesia or general anesthesia. A small cannula is inserted into the fatty tissue through tiny incisions. The excess fatty tissue is gently suctioned out with the cannula. Modern liposuction techniques, such as the tumescent technique, ensure that the procedure is less traumatic for the tissue and that healing is accelerated. In addition to the targeted removal of fat, the treatment can also create a slight skin-tightening effect, making the result appear even more harmonious and natural.

Areas

03

Liposuction is excellently suited for treating problem zones that do not disappear despite normal weight, exercise, and a healthy diet. The most common treatment areas include:

  • Abdomen: After pregnancy or weight changes, the abdominal area can show stubborn fat deposits.
  • Thighs and hips: Women often have local fat accumulations on the thighs and hips, which can lead to a disproportionate silhouette.
  • Double chin: A double chin can be removed through liposuction to achieve a firmer and more youthful profile.

Preparation

04

Before liposuction, a comprehensive consultation takes place in which Dr. Rüegg discusses your goals, wishes, and expectations with you. A questionnaire helps to record your health requirements, clarify your medical history, and take any allergies and medications into account. During the consultation, the procedure will be explained to you in detail and you will receive information on aftercare. Dr. Rüegg will also discuss with you which zones are suitable for liposuction and which techniques will be used. Before the operation, you should avoid certain medications and on the day of the operation, do not wear any creams, make-up, or jewelry.

Procedure

05

The procedure can be completed in around 45 minutes, but usually takes longer depending on the scope and number of zones treated. You will be placed under general anesthesia throughout the treatment so that the procedure is painless. After the liposuction, you can leave the clinic directly when accompanied. The procedure is performed in our clinic, which specializes in aesthetic surgery and guarantees the highest standards in patient care.

Healing

06

After liposuction, changes are generally recognizable immediately, even if swelling and bruising may temporarily affect the appearance. The final result appears after about three to six months, once all swelling has subsided and the contours have fully settled.
Rest is important in the first few weeks, as is the consistent wearing of special compression garments that support healing and stabilize the tissue. Additionally, manual lymphatic drainage is often recommended, as it can promote and accelerate the healing process. Many patients achieve particularly harmonious and clear results with this additional post-treatment.

Result

07

The result of liposuction is immediately visible, even if swelling may initially mask the final image. The final shape appears after a few months, once the skin has completely healed and the contours have settled.
Lipoaspiration permanently changes body proportions. Even with later weight changes, these newly created proportions generally remain, provided a healthy lifestyle is maintained. The result is a long-term refined and more harmonious body shape that can sustainably support well-being and body image and lead to improved self-confidence.

Frequently Asked Questions

Here we answer the most important questions regarding liposuction.

How long does the procedure take?

The duration of liposuction depends on the number of zones to be treated and the scope of the procedure. As a rule, the procedure for one zone takes around 45 minutes. Smaller areas, such as the submental area (under the chin) or individual sections of the abdomen, can be treated in less time, while larger zones such as the thighs or abdomen may take more time. Dr. Rüegg selects the individually appropriate method and technique to achieve the best possible result.

Thanks to modern minimally invasive techniques, the scars after liposuction are small, inconspicuous, and usually barely visible. The cannulas used for suctioning the fat are inserted through tiny incisions in the skin that are only a few millimeters in size. These incisions are located in inconspicuous places, such as in natural skin folds or in areas that are less visible. The scars fade over time and are usually barely perceptible after a few months.

The return to work varies depending on the zones treated and the type of activity. In most cases, patients can return to work after about a week, especially if the activity does not require physical exertion. However, if larger zones have been treated that require more intensive healing (such as thighs or abdomen), an inability to work for up to 2 weeks may be necessary. It is advisable to avoid physical exertion and prolonged sitting or standing in the first few days after liposuction.

The healing process after liposuction improves step by step. In the first 10 to 14 days, muscle-ache-like pain, swelling, and bruising may occur, which is completely normal. Pain medication can alleviate these symptoms. Although rest is sensible during this time, light activities such as walks and gentle stretching are recommended to promote circulation and support the healing process.

Compression garments should be worn consistently for about six weeks to stabilize the tissue and allow for optimal contouring. Especially in the initial period, manual lymphatic drainage can be helpful as it reduces swelling and accelerates healing. The final result appears after three to six months, once the swelling has completely subsided and the skin has taken on its new shape. Regular aftercare and controlled healing monitoring by Dr. Rüegg ensure that the healing process proceeds optimally.
