Breast Reduction

Naturally beautiful and harmonious – for a balanced silhouette.

Breast Reduction

For many patients, excessively large breasts can represent a significant burden. Symptoms such as back and neck pain or tension often occur, which noticeably restrict daily life. Negative social experiences, such as unwanted stares or comments, as well as difficulties finding well-fitting clothing, can be equally distressing. All of this can impair well-being and lead to a sense of discomfort.

A breast reduction with PD Dr. med. Eva M. Rüegg offers you a long-term solution to all these problems and brings your breasts into a harmonious proportion with your body.

Through this surgical procedure, excess tissue is removed, the breast is lifted and reshaped, and the nipple is harmoniously raised to improve the aesthetic appearance. The procedure is individually tailored to your wishes and physical requirements, resulting in a functionally sound and aesthetically natural result that fits perfectly with your figure.

The breast reduction is performed under general anesthesia. Many patients report noticeable relief in the shoulder and neck area shortly after the procedure, as well as great satisfaction with their new, balanced silhouette. Careful aftercare supports the healing process and accompanies you safely through the initial period after surgery.

A comprehensive guide

Principle

01

Breast reduction is a surgical procedure aimed at reducing breast volume, removing excess skin, and repositioning the nipples. The goal is a harmonious, more proportional breast shape that is in balance with body proportions. This is intended to improve both the aesthetic appearance and personal well-being. Breast reduction not only provides a visual improvement in shape but also helps alleviate physical complaints caused by the weight of excessively large breasts.

Technique

02

Breast reduction is performed under general anesthesia and usually takes about 3 hours. During the procedure, excess tissue consisting of skin, fat, and mammary gland tissue is removed. The breast is reshaped, and the nipples are reduced in size and repositioned. In rare cases, an additional incision in the inframammary fold may be necessary (T-incision) to further optimize the aesthetic result. A central part of the planning is the discussion about the desired remaining breast size, so that the implementation corresponds as closely as possible to your expectations and a balanced, natural result is achieved.

Scope of treatment

03

The procedure focuses on the excess tissue of the breast, the areola, and the skin in the breast area. Breast reduction is particularly suitable for women who have lost volume and firmness due to pregnancy, weight loss, or the natural aging process. Deformities or asymmetries of the breast can also be corrected. Breast reduction helps to shape the breast proportionally to the rest of the body and increase self-confidence.

Preparation

04

Before the breast reduction, a thorough consultation and examination by Dr. med. Eva Rüegg will take place. In an initial discussion, your wishes and expectations are addressed, and the most suitable method for you is selected together. You will receive comprehensive information on the possible techniques, the procedure itself, and aftercare. Optimal preparation also includes maintaining a stable body weight within a healthy range. On the day of surgery, it is recommended to avoid makeup, creams, and deodorants. Dr. Rüegg also ensures that you are medically well-prepared for the procedure and that all questions regarding healing have been clarified.

Procedure

05

Breast reduction usually takes about three hours and is performed under general anesthesia. During the operation, excess breast tissue is removed, and the breast is lifted and reshaped. Depending on the scope of the procedure, treatment is performed on an outpatient basis or with a stay of one to two nights in the clinic to recover in peace.
After discharge, you will wear a special supportive bra that aids healing and stabilizes the new shape.

Healing

06

Healing time is individual but usually takes one to two weeks, during which a break from work is advisable. In the first few days, pain and swelling may occur, which can be well controlled with appropriate painkillers and will gradually subside. Sporting activities should be avoided for about four to six weeks. The final result becomes apparent after six to nine months, once the tissue has fully healed and the new breast shape is stable. Follow-up appointments take place at appropriate times during this period to support you with information.

Result

07

The result of the breast reduction is visible immediately after healing and leads to a firmer, more youthful, and smaller breast shape. The scars resulting from the procedure are located in usually inconspicuous places, such as around the areola and vertically to the breast fold, and fade over time. With consistent scar care, these scars will be barely visible after some time.

Frequently Asked Questions

Here we answer the most important questions regarding breast reduction.

How long does the procedure take?

The breast reduction is performed under general anesthesia and takes about three hours. During the procedure, excess tissue consisting of skin, mammary gland, and fat is removed. The breast is reshaped from the remaining tissue to create an aesthetically pleasing proportion that fits the body. The operation takes place in a modern operating room under the highest medical standards.

After the operation, scars remain around the areola and vertically to the breast fold. In rare cases, an additional incision in the inframammary fold is necessary (T-incision). Our experienced specialist PD Dr. med. Eva M. Rüegg selects the technique so that the scars heal as inconspicuously and optimally as possible. Over time, they fade significantly, especially with consistent scar care. Our team accompanies you through all phases of treatment and provides helpful tips for optimal aftercare.

After breast reduction, you should take sufficient time to recover. Patients who work in an office or have low physical strain can usually return to their daily routine after about two weeks. If your work involves heavy use of the arms, hands, or back, such as in nursing or manual trades, you should expect a downtime of three to four weeks. Our goal is a sustainable solution that improves your quality of life in the long term without unnecessary strain during the healing phase.

Yes, every breast reduction automatically includes a breast lift. The procedure aims not only to reduce the size of the breasts but also to provide aesthetic reshaping. In the process, the breast is lifted, reshaped, and the skin envelope is tightened so that your new breast size is in a harmonious relationship with your body anatomy. This creates a natural-looking result that takes your individual wishes and needs into account.

As part of the breast reduction, the nipple and areola are moved upwards to the anatomically correct position. This is necessary to support the new breast shape and create an aesthetically harmonious overall appearance. Thanks to the many years of experience of our specialist, the position of the nipple is precisely matched to your new breast size, with great sensitivity for proportions and symmetry.

The price for a breast reduction starts at a flat rate of 15,300 CHF. Costs may vary depending on individual findings, anatomical requirements, and the complexity of the procedure.

In a personal consultation, we will provide you with a transparent and binding cost estimate.

Health insurance only covers the costs in rare cases of proven medical suffering.

Our aesthetic clinic in Lucerne offers you not only medical excellence but also personal care at eye level. Under the direction of PD Dr. med. Eva M.
