Upper Lip Lift

Enhance your smile with natural harmony and definition.

Upper Lip Lift

Sometimes the distance between the nose and upper lip is naturally a bit longer, and sometimes it only develops with age. Both can make the face appear less balanced. An upper lip lift gently shortens this distance and improves the proportions of the lower third of the face. The result is a fresh, more youthful appearance, while preserving the natural shape of the lips.

PD Dr. med. Eva M. Rüegg performs the upper lip lift with a small incision directly under the nose. The operation is very precise, and the scars are practically hidden.

This procedure reduces the distance between the nose and the upper lip, giving the upper lip more fullness and the face a more natural, balanced aesthetic.

The procedure is performed on an outpatient basis under local anesthesia. Thanks to the gentle technique, recovery is comfortable and predictable.

A Comprehensive Guide

Principle

01

The upper lip lift is a surgical procedure that shortens the distance between the nose and the upper lip. This creates harmonious proportions in the lower facial area, making the face appear fresher and more youthful overall.

A woman with fair skin and blue eyes rests her chin on her hand, looking thoughtfully into the distance against a soft pink background.

Technique

02

The procedure is performed via a small incision directly under the nose. Excess skin is removed, and the area between the nose and upper lip is tightened, which adds fullness to the upper lip and shortens the distance. The procedure is performed under local anesthesia, so you will not feel any pain during the treatment.

Lip Augmentation

03

If more volume is desired in addition to shortening the upper lip, the upper lip lift can be combined with lip augmentation. This can be achieved either through lipofilling or a filler treatment of the upper and lower lip.

In the case of a combined treatment with lipofilling, a slightly longer recovery period of around two weeks is usually to be expected due to increased swelling, whereas a pure tightening procedure generally heals after about one week.

Preparation

04

Before the operation, a detailed consultation takes place, during which Dr. Rüegg discusses your wishes and carefully assesses the upper lip and facial proportions. Based on this, the upper lip lift is optimally planned, and possible additional treatments such as lipofilling or fillers are discussed. For good healing, it is important to consistently refrain from nicotine for six weeks before and after the procedure. On the day of the operation itself, the skin should be free of creams, make-up, and jewelry. Certain medications – especially blood thinners – may need to be paused after consulting with a doctor.

Procedure

05

The upper lip lift takes about one hour and is performed on an outpatient basis under local anesthesia. Immediately after the procedure, you can go home and rest. Soft foods should be prepared for the first few days. Regular cooling supports initial healing.

A person with closed eyes receives a facial treatment, while hands in blue gloves gently touch their face.

Healing

06

After the upper lip lift, slight swelling and redness may occur, but these subside quickly. You are usually socially presentable again after about one week. The final result is fully visible after 3 to 6 months, once the swelling has completely subsided.

Result

07

The result of the upper lip lift is visible immediately after healing. The proportions between the nose and upper lip are harmonized, and the upper lip gains fullness. The result looks natural and gives the face a fresh, balanced appearance. Since the procedure is permanent, the new shape remains long-term, even as the natural aging process continues.
