Tummy tuck

Perfect contours for a firm silhouette.

Tummy tuck

For many women, a flat, firm abdomen is a goal after pregnancy or weight loss—one that cannot always be achieved through diet and exercise alone. Excess skin and fat can accumulate on the abdominal wall and can be difficult to remove despite all efforts.

An abdominal wall lift (abdominoplasty) offers an effective solution to address these challenges and improve body contours. The tummy tuck is performed under general anaesthesia and involves removing excess skin and, if necessary, tightening the underlying muscles. This results in a firm, flat abdomen and a harmonious silhouette—often desired after childbirth or significant weight loss.

PD Dr. med. Eva M. Rüegg performs the procedure with the utmost precision and experience. The incision is planned so that the resulting scars are usually below the bikini line and therefore well concealed.

The goal is a natural, aesthetic result that suits your body and sustainably improves your quality of life.

A comprehensive guide

Principle

01

An abdominal wall lift (abdominoplasty) helps remove excess skin and fat in the abdominal area and tighten the abdominal muscles, especially after pregnancies or significant weight loss. The aim is to achieve a flatter, firmer abdominal region.

The close-up of a person’s lower abdomen shows a horizontal scar below the navel, typically indicating a healed surgical incision, e.g. after a caesarean section.

Technique

02

The procedure is performed under general anaesthesia. An incision is made above the pubic area in the lower abdomen, directly in the natural skin fold, to remove excess skin and tighten the muscles. In some cases, liposuction is also performed to optimise body contours.

Areas

03

Abdominoplasty focuses on the abdominal area, including the skin and musculature and, if desired, adjacent zones such as the flanks.

Preparation

04

Before the tummy tuck, a detailed consultation takes place to clarify your wishes and expectations. We assess your medical baseline, discuss the appropriate surgical technique, aftercare and possible risks. For optimal preparation, we recommend, among other things, a stable, healthy body weight and avoiding nicotine before the procedure to support the healing process as effectively as possible.

Procedure

05

The operation usually takes 2–3 hours. You will be treated under general anaesthesia, and after the operation you may go home accompanied. The clinic stay is either outpatient or lasts 1–2 nights, depending on your needs.

Healing

06

In the first weeks after surgery, rest and controlled support of the healing process are the main focus. For around six weeks, a compression belt should be worn and heavy lifting avoided. Swelling and mild discomfort are normal during this phase. Lymphatic drainage may be recommended to support and speed up healing.
Light physical activity is usually possible again after about two weeks, while sporting exertion can generally be increased gradually after four to six weeks. Consistent scar care then plays an important role in achieving an optimal aesthetic result.

Result

07

The abdomen appears significantly flatter immediately after surgery, although swelling may still be present at first. The final result develops gradually and is visible after around three to six months. The abdomen then appears firmer and harmoniously integrated into the body’s proportions. The result remains stable in the long term, provided lifestyle and body weight remain largely constant.

Frequently asked questions

Here we answer the most important questions about tummy tuck surgery.

How long does the procedure take?

A tummy tuck (also known as an abdominal wall lift or abdominoplasty) usually takes 2–3 hours. This surgical treatment is performed under general anaesthesia in our modern clinic in Lucerne. Depending on your starting point—for example, how much the abdominal skin has loosened, whether fatty tissue is removed or the abdominal muscles are tightened—the duration may vary slightly. In some cases, abdominoplasty is combined with additional procedures.

After the operation, the abdominal wall and surrounding tissue need time to heal. Light everyday activities are possible immediately; physically demanding work or sport only after around 4–6 weeks. During this phase, you will wear a special compression belt or garment that stabilises the abdominal area, smooths skin folds and supports tightening. We will guide you through every phase of healing.

Every abdominal wall lift leaves a scar in the lower abdominal area, just above the intimate zone, so it can later be well concealed by clothing or swimwear. The incision is made above the pubic area in the lower abdomen, directly in the natural skin fold, to achieve the most aesthetic appearance possible. The scar fades significantly over time. We support you with proven scar care and provide close follow-up after the procedure.

Yes, many patients choose to combine abdominoplasty with additional procedures, as there is often bothersome laxity or volume loss in other areas of the body as well. The operation is therefore often complemented by breast augmentation and/or a breast lift, as is also known from a Mommy Makeover. In addition, liposuction can be useful for further body contouring. In many cases, these treatments can be combined in a single operation.

The price for a tummy tuck starts at a flat rate from CHF 13,700. The exact amount depends on individual factors, the extent of the correction and any additional treatments.

If there is a medical indication, for example abdominal wall or umbilical hernias, the medical portion of the procedure may be covered by health insurance. The aesthetic tightening itself is generally not reimbursed, except in rare cases.

In a personal consultation, we will provide you with a detailed cost estimate and discuss all options, including possible combinations such as liposuction, arm lift or thigh lift.
